Just like the lens we choose to wear change the way we see the world around us, the perspective or mindset we choose to experience weight loss and wellness through impacts our behaviors and outcomes. What lens are you wearing and is it time for a new pair???😎😎
“Taking responsibility for your beliefs and judgments gives you the power to change them.”
— Byron Katie
Mindset is a huge buzz word associated with making lifestyle changes to support weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight long term. I don’t think many of us would argue that mindset and attitude are a big part of long term success when it comes to our wellness. The question is what does mindset really mean and how do I go about changing it?
The first step is to explore and understand your current mindset when it comes weight loss and wellness. Another word for mindset is perspective. Perspectives serve as filters through which we see situations in our lives. Perspectives are made up of our thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs and assumptions we make about a particular subject, quite possibly without even being aware of it. Look at a given situation through one set of thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs and assumptions and it looks one way…..look at the same situation through an alternative set of thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs and assumptions and it can look very, very different.
The two words that stand out to me most in Byron Katie’s quote “Taking responsibility for your beliefs and judgments gives you the power to change them” are responsibility and power. We can’t take responsibility for our mindset without understanding what it is first. All though you may have been putting effort towards achieving and maintaining a health weight for years, many have never taken the time to specifically understand the perspective they have been approaching weight loss from. As a Health and Wellness Coach, this is where I begin the process with my clients.
What do you believe about your ability to attain and maintain a healthy body weight? What assumptions do you make about your ability to do what it takes to change? What emotions do you associate with weight, food, activity, body image, etc, and how do they impact your behaviors when you experience them? How do your current beliefs about weight loss leave you feeling? What excites you about undertaking this process? What scares you?
Once you can piece together and define your current perspective or mindset, you can then decide if this mindset is working for you or against you. Often in working with coaching clients, they’ll discover that the perspective or lens they’ve been seeing (and feeling!) their desire for weight loss through is full of old beliefs that no longer serve them. Sometimes the things we have been thinking are not even true! This helps us to realize that we don’t need more will power or to want it more or to try harder when it comes to adopting healthy habits to support a healthy weight. What they discover instead, is the need and overwhelming desire to let go of the “old story” and replace it with a new, updated story that empowers, inspires and excites. It’s like tossing those old, scratched up sunglasses and replacing them with a new pair that allow you to see the world in a bright and crisp way!!!
Creating a safe, judgement free space to explore and process your mindset…..thoughts, feelings, emotions, beliefs
and assumptions…can lead to all kinds of new insights and fresh perspectives on how to achieve your weight loss and wellness goals. Grab a notebook or digital journal and give it a try! Powerful words, Terra. I’m still working on my mindset as I peel off more layers of my inner onion. There is no doubt while on WW virtual workshops, you were able to walk me thru my old beliefs and am discover & afoot new beliefs. What a game changer! So grateful to have at least some of my mindset fairly well entrenched. Miles to go, but excited for the next onion layers to peel off!
