Helpful vs Desirable-Different, But Both Important”

“It takes great learning to understand that all things, events, encounters and circumstances are helpful. ———A Course In Miracles

Where we are in our lives today (even if we didn’t chose it and/or don’t like it) most certainly has purpose. Where we are now is the stepping stone to where we will go next. Going forward, there are lots of paths we can take, depending on the choices we make, but for now, we are here. I know it sounds obvious “we are here”—but I’m writing about it because I think many times in our minds we kick and scream about being “here”. We wish we were some where else. Whether it be 10 pounds lighter, more financially comfortable, in better physical shape or living somewhere that it doesn’t snow on the first day of spring…..that is not where we are right now, so the battle is futile! Fighting the current moment only makes us miserable and drained of our energy. Now CLEARLY, I am NOT saying that we can’t be 10 pounds lighter, more financially comfortable, in better physical shape or living somewhere that it doesn’t snow on the first day of spring….I am simply stating if we want to take any other path than we are on now, it would serve us well to take a step back and figure out what about our current situation is “helpful” as the quote states. Helpful and desirable are not the same thing, yet both can be important clues to where we want to go and how we are going to get there on this life journey.—-Maybe this snow is here to teach me patience or to make me REALLY appreciate the spring and summer weather even more this year. Let’s face it, many of us, myself included, find it easy to take life’s “givens” for granted. In July will we really wake up when it’s 95 degrees and the kids have been out of school for a month and are now driving us nuts and say “Ahhhhhh, this is what I’ve waited for, life is good and nothing else matters except that the sun is shining and I can get outside without snow boots and a parka.”. NO! At least most likely not! Instead we will be so used to the nice weather it will be ignored or even complained about because now it’s TOO hot and we will move on to another reason why we want to be “somewhere else” physically or mentally. It’s like a dog chasing it’s tail until we realize……”all things, events, encounters and circumstances are helpful” in some way and fighting the moment de-values the quality of our lives.—–I got up early this morning for some quiet time alone before everything gets going and when I read this passage, it stopped me in my tracks and allowed me to re-focus my attitude for the day. It spoke to me so I thought it might just do the same for you. Oh happy day…all is well!!!!!!!!!!!
