This Too Shall Pass

What can you do in this moment to feel and be a little more healthy?” —– Terra Ayres

Over the weekend I was hit hard with that awful flu bug or whatever it is and although I’m better, I still have not felt myself yet. Awful! When you’re down and out but still have a million commitments to maintain it is easy to feel overwhelmed!! Then to top it off, when we don’t feel well, it is hard or impossible to continue our regular exercise routine, our eating patterns are off and blah, blah, blah!!!! So yesterday at the WW meeting someone asked how you can break the habit of always pushing good health choices off until later because making all the changes seems overwhelming, it got me thinking. What if we took a different approach and each time a thought enters that tries to tell this is too much or we can’t make all the changes necessary to lose weight and stay healthy for whatever reason (too busy, not feeling well, have too much weight to lose, yada yada, yada) we pose a very simple question to ourselves: “What is one small thing I can do this moment to help me be and feel healthier??”. Our minds are funny things and when we ask ourselves questions, our minds will search for an answer that works. It breaks he process down into one tiny step that you can take action on RIGHT now and its done. This little step helps us to see that we don’t need to be fearful or feel over whelmed. It’s easy. All we need to do is what ever we can at the moment and then feel good about it. So this morning when my alarm went off very early to go to the gym, I knew I couldn’t make it again today. Although I’m feeling better, I know going out and doing a bunch of cardio still isn’t the best thing for me right now. Rather than getting bummed out (this is the hard part because burning those calories makes me feel better and is part of my routine and I love routine!!) I got up and packed more fruit to take with me to work today and I’m trying to drink more water right now. That’s the best I can do in my current situation and I need to accept that and make modifications!! What I don’t need to do is get down in the dumps and allow myself to get an Oat Maple Scone at Starbucks today on my way to work and top it off with a Venti Chai Tea Latte to console myself!! Whatever your situation, the answers to what you can do in this very moment to feel and be a little more healthy are endless but they share a common theme, they can all be completed immediately and will also make you feel better right away. Ahhhh-the instant gratification we all love! I guess the point of my message for today is to take one small action any time you feel a little down or overwhelmed because it will make you feel better. Keep in mind we all have challenges, especially at this time of year, and one of the most important things is to NOT get down on ourselves or our current situation, even if we don’t particularly like it! “This too shall pass” so make the best choices you can in the moment and then let the rest go. Let’s make this a fabulous day-no matter what!!!!
